Common Mental Health Conditions in Veterans

Between 2002 and 2014, more than half of Veterans who sought services through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) received a provisional mental health diagnosis, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive disorders, and anxiety disorders other than PTSD (Prickett, 2015). In 2014, about 20 Veterans died by suicide each day (VA, 2016c). It is these statistics that illustrate the importance of mental health training for all healthcare professionals working with the Veteran population. In this course, you will learn about special considerations for working with Veterans and their families. You will also learn about the mental health conditions common in Veterans including posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, substance use disorder, and complicated grief. In addition, you will learn about the identification of suicide risk in Veterans with mental health and/or substance use disorders as well as practical ways to manage suicidality.
